It’s 2012 and we know what that means. No, I’m not talking about leap year. No, I’m not talking about the Olympics. No… okay, let me just spell it out. Presidential Election Year (in the United States – sorry international readers). But amidst all the rampant speculation and political horse race coverage, we can often lose sight of what’s important in a Presidential candidate: the ability to deliver a kick-ass speech while we face certain death.

1. Jack Nicholson as President James Dale (Mars Attacks)

Admittedly, a world crazy enough to elect Jack Nicholson president deserves to be attacked by Mars. But there’s a wicked swagger to the President and, clearly, he’s got a way with words – even if it doesn’t turn out so well in the end.

2. Morgan Freeman as President Beck (Deep Impact)

Remote Access

Today, we continue the Best of the Decades feature. Four down, five to go. This week, I graciously present my picks for the ten best films from the 1960s, and you graciously tell me I mention Billy Wilder and Alfred Hitchcock too much. But don’t worry, this will, sadly, be the last week I’ll have them on my lists. Enjoy and feel free to comment with your own picks.

Die Hard 4: Live Free or Die Hard
The fourth instalment in the Die Hard series is geeky enough for me to be included on this list. The story revolves around a group of super hackers/cyber terrorists who plan to hack FBI computers and takes over several U.S. technology infrastructures. Thanks to Bruce Willis’ immortality and the aid of non-evil computer geeks headed by Justin Long (aka The Mac Guy), the movie has a happy ending

Nmap In The Movies

For reasons unknown, Hollywood has decided that Nmap is the tool to show whenever hacking scenes are needed. At least it is a lot more realistic than silly 3D animation approach used in many previous movies (e.g. “hacking the Gibson” on Hackers, or the much worse portrayals on Swordfish). We always like to see Nmap in the movies, so we have catalogued known instances here.
